Donated iPads from WPS help students continue education at home

MADISON, Wis.—April 13, 2020—WPS Health Solutions recently donated 15 Apple iPad tablets with the help of John Matthews, a member of the WPS Board of Directors and former Executive Director of Madison Teachers Inc.

The iPads were given to the Beaver Dam Unified School District, Madison Metropolitan School District, and the Foundation of Madison Public Schools.

The devices then were distributed to students who are in need of learning technology at home.

“WPS’ donation is crucial to the continuing education of children because of schools being closed for several months given the coronavirus pandemic,” Matthews said.

He was concerned that some families didn’t have the means to own a computer or a tablet device. He asked WPS about the availability of used iPads that could be donated, and the Information Technology team provided 15 devices.

“All parties are not only appreciative, but excited,” Matthews said. “Because of the pandemic, many teachers are attempting to stay in contact with their students electronically, and actually teach using electronic devices. Thus, the importance that all children be able to take advantage of their teacher’s efforts.”

“Providing technology and the resources needed for children to continue their education from home is a small act that WPS can do to make a large and lasting impact in our WPS communities,” said WPS Chief Technology Officer Sandi Gardner.

Kelly Kuenzi, a teacher in Beaver Dam, was thrilled that her school was one of the recipients. “I have delivered six of the iPads and I can’t even describe in words how rewarding it has been,” she said. “Every family has been so appreciative and amazed that they get to keep this iPad. I feel a little guilty being able to see the receiving end when I didn’t do anything but deliver it.”

Kuenzi shared a text from one of the parents: “I wanted to thank you and whoever donated. Please thank them for us. She already did a lesson and is on her next one.”

TASC Supports Learning Experiences at MMSD with Donated STEAM and Personal Care Resources

Madison, Wis.—Total Administrative Services Corporation (TASC) celebrated its 45th anniversary with acts of service that will soon benefit students of the 45+ schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD).

About 1,200 employees from across the country gathered at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center from March 10-12, 2020. During those few days, TASC employees participated in paid volunteer time to help support the unique needs of all MMSD students.

On Wednesday, March 11, about a third of TASC’s volunteer corps went shopping for supplies to fill Care Boxes with nonperishable food items, personal hygiene products, and toys and games. All of these items, as well as store gift cards, were assembled into care packages that will be delivered to every MMSD school at a later date.

While TASC had initially planned to send its volunteers into the district schools to engage with students in fun learning activities, TASC and MMSD made a collaborative decision to suspend these plans.

“This is a time of preparation and prevention,” said TASC CEO Dan Rashke. “We at TASC, along with everyone at MMSD, are committed to keeping our students, staff and community safe and healthy.”

Grace Wall is the TASC employee who coordinated the entire TASC in the Community operation. “We are disappointed that we couldn’t go into the schools this week, but we are an adaptable team of coworkers and made the best of the situation,” she said. “We are proud to provide students with incredible tools and resources that will serve them now and in the future.”

Recognizing MMSD’s longstanding partnership with Demco and the district-wide Makerspace initiative, TASC relied on their expertise to select products and hands-on activities that engage students academically. Demco delivered Makerspace carts to MMSD schools earlier this week. Teachers and librarians are eager to unpack the boxes and give their students access to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) materials.

“We are thrilled that TASC is providing resources for our students and teachers to create spaces where students will gather to design, invent, tinker, explore, build and discover,” said TJ McCray, MMSD’s Director of Instructional Technology & Media Services. “This speaks directly to our district’s vision for all students—that they will graduate with the skills and abilities to be successful in college, career and community.”

All told, TASC’s in-kind contribution is valued at $400,000.
