One City Scholars to Tour Microsoft Corporation & Starbucks
Will Explore Careers in STEM Fields and Entrepreneurship
This week, 12 One City Scholars enrolled in One City Preparatory Academy will fly to Washington state with our Founder and CEO, Kaleem Caire, to tour Microsoft Corporation and Starbucks. They will also meet with some amazing leaders in the fields of Technology, Education and Philanthropy, and tour the University of Washington as well. Specifically, our Scholars will:
- Learn about careers at one of some World’s leading STEM and Growth Companies
- Learn about the interests and programs of major philanthropy
- Connect with some of the nation’s leaders in educational technology and education reform
- Tour one of the world’s leading universities and model cities
- Broaden our Scholars’ geo-cultural experiences through visits to cultural and national landmarks
Products of the Trip:
- Each Scholar will write a 3-5 page paper about their experience, what they learned, and new thoughts they have about possible career opportunities for themselves. They will also share how each company they have visited, and each leader they have met with, are having a positive social impact in the United States and/or globally.
- Scholars attending will host a presentation about their trip to other One City Scholars, staff and families.
- Each Scholar will earn credit for completing a Field Expedition through One City’s Mastery Transcript.
We are so grateful for our local sponsors, Jaeckle Distributors, American Family Insurance Corporation, American Family Dreams Foundation, Summit Credit Union and Starion Bank, for their financial support of this important Career Expedition.
We are also thankful for Mr. Raghu Ramakrishnan, the CTO of Data at Microsoft Corporation, who also serves as a Board member of One City Schools Foundation, and Ms. Tyra Mariani, the President of the Schultz Family Foundation, and their team members, for their support in helping us arrange this trip. We are still looking for additional local sponsors to cover the cost of each Scholar taking this trip: it costs $2,100 per Scholar for flight, lodging and meals from November 9 – 12, 2022.
If you or your business/organization can help us, please email Eliza Waters at ewaters@onecityschools.org. You can also click the “Donate” button below to make your contribution online. Additionally, if our Scholars can take a tour of your business or organization, please email Gail Wiseman at gwiseman@onecityschools.org.

Our mission is to seed a new model of public education that ensures young children are on track to succeed in a college or career preparatory program from birth through high school graduation. We will eventually enroll 926 children from age 2 through through 12th grade and serve as a national model for the transformation of PK-12 education in the United States.

Lodgic Everyday Community: Nonprofit Night Out & Volunteer Fair
Madison is a pitch-in, lend-a-hand and help-a-neighbor town. To celebrate that philanthropic spirit, Lodgic Everyday Community is hosting a nonprofit night out & volunteer fair, Monday, Nov. 14, from 4-7 p.m. in its event spaces at 2801 Marshall Ct. in the Village of Shorewood Hills.
“We identified – as part of our mission at Lodgic – that we could fill a niche and utilize our community spaces to connect local residents with a wide variety of volunteer opportunities from a roster of great organizations looking for additional support,” says Madison-Based Margaret Ebeling, the interim CEO of Lodgic. “We constructed this event as a small step to answering the often-asked question ‘how can I help?’ especially now when the need for volunteers is so great and the supply so low.”
The volunteer fair runs from 4-7 p.m. and participants will include: The American Red Cross – Wisconsin Region; The Beacon; Big Brother Big Sister; The Canopy Center; Dream Bikes; GiGi’s Playhouse; Heartland Farm Sanctuary; Keep Calm Sensory Zone; The Literacy Network; Lodgic Everyday Community; Lussier Community Education Center; New Bridge Madison; Porchlight; Reach Dane; Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin; Special Olympics Wisconsin; Urban League of Greater Madison; United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Dane County, the UW Arboretum, Ronald McDonald House Charities Madison, and more.
Post-volunteer fair, Lodgic will host a special-nonprofit-networking hour from 7-8 p.m. “For us, the 14th will be a night of making connections and showcase all the good that people make happen here in Madison and beyond,” adds Ebeling. “It all part of our mission to ‘Do a Little Good Every Day’ here at Lodgic.” The nonprofit night out and volunteer fair are free to attend and open to the public. Free parking is available underneath Lodgic’s building, at the University Crossing medical complex on the north side of Marshall Court or on surrounding streets.

AMERICAN PATCHWORK QUARTET WILL SEW MUSICAL QUILT OF CULTURES DURING NOV. 17 PERFORMANCE IN MADISON
MADISON – The American Patchwork Quartet sews together echoes of traditional folk music dating back to Colonial America with the contemporary voices of its members’ ancestral roots to create a multicultural, folk music tapestry. The Quartet makes its Wisconsin debut on Nov. 17 at the Wisconsin Union Theater’s Play Circle Theater at 7:30 p.m. CDT.
Guests can purchase tickets to attend virtually or in person by phone at (608) 265-2787, online or in person at the Memorial Union Box Office. The Wisconsin Union Theater offers ticket discounts to Wisconsin Union members, guests under the age of 18, and University of Wisconsin–Madison students, staff and faculty.
Each in-person performance ticket includes a drink ticket to the brand-new, temporary Play Circle Pop-Up Bar from 6:30-7:45 p.m., which includes selections of alcohol and non-alcohol beverages.
The Quartet has said that it’s on a mission to reclaim the immigrant soul of American roots music. Leading in this mission are GRAMMY-winning vocalist and Indian American Falu Shah; GRAMMY-winning guitarist, vocalist and South Carolina-born Clay Ross; three-time GRAMMY-winning drummer and Detroit native Clarence Penn; and Jazz Life Album of the Year winner and Tokyo-born bassist Yasushi Nakamura. Joining the quartet for this performance will be composer, producer and violinist Harini “Rini” Raghavan, who blends Indian classical and folk music with electronica and rock.
In American Patchwork Quartet, these musicians bring together their many musical influences, education and experiences, aiming to shine a light on what they call the immigrant soul of American root music and to combat prejudice against race and immigration. Part of that effort, they say, means helping audience members acknowledge people’s commonalities and differences to strengthen America’s patchwork.
“The American Patchwork Quartet is exquisite in its musical interpretation and its blending of new and old folk music traditions,” Wisconsin Union Theater Director Elizabeth Snodgrass said. “Each member is an extraordinary, talented musician in their own right, and the combination of their unique talents and styles makes for an innovative sound within the roots music genre.”
The Wisconsin Union Theater 2022-23 season also includes performances by Sō Percussion with Caroline Shaw on Nov. 5; Geneva Lewis with Evren Ozel on Jan. 27, 2023; PILOBOLUS Big Five-OH! on Feb. 1, 2023; Imani Winds on Feb. 5, 2023; Cécile McLorin Salvant on Feb. 7, 2023; Samara Joy on Feb. 16, 2023; Immanuel Wilkins on March 25, 2023; Anthony McGill with the UW–Madison Symphony Orchestra on April 4, 2023; and the Danish String Quartet on April 18, 2023.
The Wisconsin Union’s Wisconsin Union Theater proudly co-presents its season with the UW–Madison student-led Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Performing Arts Committee. Purchases to Wisconsin Union Theater performances support WUD student leadership opportunities and the Wisconsin Union’s vision to serve as the social heart of UW–Madison, where all belong.
