OPPORTUNITY TO HONOR VETERANS, SERVICE MEMBERS FOR THEIR SERVICE AT MEMORIAL UNION NOV. 10

MADISON – The University Veteran Services and Wisconsin Union teams at the University of Wisconsin–Madison invite the public to recognize veterans and service members during the Veterans Day Recognition Breakfast on Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. in the Main Lounge at Memorial Union.

Following the event, the UW–Madison chapter of Student Veterans of America will provide free miniature United States flags for members of the public to place on Bascom Hill in honor of veterans. The student organization will make flags available through 4 p.m. or while supplies last.

The Veterans Day Recognition Breakfast will include free light refreshments, live music by the Wisconsin Brass Quintet, a presentation of the United States and Wisconsin flags by students in the Army ROTC Badger Battalion Color Guard and remarks by:

  • Dr. Lori Reesor, UW–Madison vice chancellor for Student Affairs
  • Joe Rassmussen, director of University Veteran Services and United States Marine Corps veteran
  • Natalie Isensee ‘00, the 2022 Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Woman Veteran of the Year and a former United States Marine Corps captain

“Veterans Day brings an opportunity each year to acknowledge those alongside us, who served our country, sacrificing time with friends and family, putting other parts of life on hold and putting their lives on the line for us,” said Mark Guthier, Wisconsin Union director and UW–Madison associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs. “It’s also a solemn reminder of those who did not return home from service and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

This event is part of year-round efforts by the Wisconsin Union to honor service members and veterans and by University Veteran Services to support UW–Madison service members and veterans. The Wisconsin Union and the University Veteran Services teams have hosted a Veterans Day event since 2018, and recognizing service members has been part of the Wisconsin Union’s history since its building Memorial Union opened in 1928.

University Veterans Services supports service member and veteran UW–Madison students with advising, benefits consultation, connections to a community of support and peer support programs.

Memorial Union opened in 1928 with the words “Erected and Dedicated to the Memory of the Men and Women of the University of Wisconsin Who Served in our Country’s Wars” in its south side stone. The building has also long had wooden plaques listing the names of fallen UW–Madison service members.

Memorial Union also includes an electronic memorial that debuted in 2019 called the Gold Star Honor Roll, which includes the names of more than 900 fallen Badger service members. The Union’s electronic Gold Star Honor Roll can be viewed in Memorial Hall at Memorial Union, the Hamel Family Browsing Library at Memorial Union and online. Fallen UW–Madison alumni service members, who died of service-related causes, can be submitted to the Gold Star Honor Roll here.

The recognition breakfast is made possible with support from the Wisconsin Union and the National Veterans Leadership Foundation.

Guests can learn more about the Veterans Day Recognition Breakfast and other campus Veterans Day events here.

Pellitteri Waste Systems Introduces Innovative Waste Management App to Provide Reminders, Simplify Routines, and Help Recycle Right

SOUTHERN WISCONSIN (Oct. 30, 2023) — Today, Pellitteri Waste Systems, a Madison-based, family-owned waste management company committed to sustainability, proudly announces the launch of the Pellitteri Waste Systems app. The mobile application is designed to revolutionize how customers manage their trash and recycling, ensuring they never miss trash day again.

“Six a.m. is no time to chase the trash truck,” said Danielle Pellitteri, Vice President of Pellitteri Waste Systems. “Running to the curb in a robe should be a thing of the past. Now, with the Pellitteri Waste Systems app, our customers have the power in their hands to never forget to set out their trash and recycling carts again. Plus, we know our community is looking for answers about what is recyclable and how to do it properly; this app can help.”

Key features of the app include:

  • Customized reminders and alerts
  • At-a-glance calendars
  • Proper disposal tips

Pellitteri customers no longer need to print calendars or otherwise remember their route collection schedule; they can always see it and easily set up reminder notifications. Inclement weather and holidays could change collection schedules. Customers can choose to receive alerts for their routes in the app.

For those who want to make a difference but don’t always know what’s recyclable, the Recycle Right search feature provides tips on how to dispose of specific items correctly. Pellitteri is excited to see more of the community use this tool, recycle right, and add to Pellitteri’s 145 million pounds of recyclables collected each year. By properly recycling, you can help build a more sustainable, eco-friendly future so more recyclables can be made into new products.

“We believe that waste solutions should be convenient and environmentally conscious. The Pellitteri Waste Systems app empowers users to be the star in their house, neighborhood, and on behalf of our planet while making their weekly routine a breeze,” said Pellitteri.  The app is available to download at pellitteri.com/RecycleRight or directly from the Apple and Google Play stores. Once downloaded, the app makes it easy for users to put the right items in the right carts and get them to the curb on the right day.

SUNBURST TERRACE CHAIRS LEAVE OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT AND DINING DESTINATION, THE MEMORIAL UNION TERRACE

MADISON – The Wisconsin Union’s sunburst Terrace chairs and yellow, orange and green tables have left the Union’s outdoor dining and entertainment space, the Memorial Union Terrace, as of Oct. 30.

About 350 non-sunburst brown chairs, 72 brown patio tables and 20 picnic tables are anticipated to remain at the Terrace through early November.

The Memorial Union Terrace opens each spring when the Wisconsin Union team brings 2,000 chairs with a trademarked sunburst design and 400 tables to the Terrace.

With the yellow, green and orange chairs’ arrival each spring comes a series of outdoor, free live music, film showings and art activities. Mid-Terrace season, the Wisconsin Union begins offering paddling equipment rentals and paddling events through Outdoor UW at its nearby building Memorial Union and seasonal dining options open, joining the Wisconsin Union’s year-round restaurants inside Memorial Union.

Most of the events that patrons enjoy during Terrace season as well as other events and activities, continue inside the Wisconsin Union’s buildings when Terrace season ends. This includes:

Patrons can find a full list of Wisconsin Union-hosted events at union.wisc.edu/events. They can also contact the Wisconsin Union to schedule private group activities.

While seasonal dining options, called the BBQ Stand, the Brat Stand, and Lakeview Lounge, have closed for the season, year-round, on-site dining options inside Memorial Union include pub fare at der Rathskeller; pasta bowls and made-to-order pizza at Strada; sandwiches and made-to-order salads at Carte; desserts at the Daily Scoop; a variety of beverages and house-made pastries, sandwiches and grab-n-go meals at Peet’s Coffee and Badger Market; and beverages, snacks and BBQ fare at der Stiftskeller.

The Wisconsin Union also operates dining options at the Fluno Center: Smitty’s Study Pub, which includes salads, sandwiches, tavern fare, a fish fry, and a variety of beverages and entrée options, and Oros Executive Dining Room, which includes buffet breakfasts and lunches.

“While the sunburst chairs are leaving for their winter hibernation destination, we hold more than 1,500 events from October to May for our patrons to enjoy,” Wisconsin Union Deputy Director Susan Dibbell said.

The Memorial Union Terrace first opened for a full season in 1929. Both the space and the chairs that guests enjoy there have changed throughout the past almost century, including the changing of Terrace chairs from being wooden to Wisconsin-made metal chairs.

The Wisconsin Union team welcomes about 800,000 visitors to the Terrace each season and about 3 million people to Memorial Union and 1.5 million people to Union South annually.

The current chairs’ colors pay homage to Wisconsin’s farming industry and aim to evoke Wisconsin’s seasons — John Deere green, Allis Chalmers orange, and sunshine yellow. Patrons can purchase red and white Terrace chairs exclusively online at terracestore.union.wisc.edu.

The food, beverages and merchandise that visitors purchase at the Terrace, Memorial Union, Union South and at the online Terrace Store as well as Wisconsin Union membership purchases help the Wisconsin Union provide free and low-cost events and activities as well as maintain its spaces and student leadership opportunities, some of which provide academic stipends of up to 80% of in-state tuition for Wisconsin Union student leaders. Patrons can also support this work through donations.

Wisconsin Union student leaders, who are University of Wisconsin–Madison students, plan most of the Wisconsin Union’s more than 2,000 events each year.

The Wisconsin Union does not receive taxpayer dollars for its events, activities, spaces or student leadership opportunities as part of its regular budget.

Patrons can visit union.wisc.edu for information about Wisconsin Union dining options, working and studying spaces, private event opportunities, events and activities.
